Families CrossRoads:
When families heal in community, recovery becomes more sustainable, meaningful, and generational

How it Works

The CrossRoads Families Project expands the successful CrossRoads model to focus on holistic healing of the entire family system. Operated by the RISE in partnership with Washoe County Human Services Agency (WCHSA), this project establishes a family-based transitional housing and recovery program to meet the needs of parents and children impacted by substance use disorder (SUD).

The application form is the same for both programs. To apply for our Families program, please follow the link below - it only takes 5-7 minutes!

CrossRoads Families

CrossRoads Families is an innovative recovery program designed to keep families together while parents heal from substance use. Rooted in the Therapeutic Community model, we use a 'Community as Method' approach, where community itself becomes the tool for change. The daily structure, collective responsibilities, and peer connection are a pivotal component of the transformation opportunity we offer.

Families often face an impossible choice: stay in a recovery program, or reunite with their children. CrossRoads Families removes that dilemma by creating a holistic environment where families can remain together while engaging in deep, long-term healing. This initiative is grounded in the belief that family reconciliation is not a disruption to recovery, it is central to it.

How We Support Our Families

CrossRoads Families follows the same four-phase behavior change model used across all CrossRoads programs (Induction, Primary, Senior, and Transition) while adapting each to meet the needs of whole families. Through intentional structure, skill development, and community engagement, families build the foundation for recovery together and strengthen their sense of personal, collective, and civic responsibility.

  • Stable housing and structured support prevent CPS removals and foster safe, nurturing environments for children.

  • Onsite case management, counseling, childcare, job readiness support, and recovery planning.

  • PRSS staff with lived experience offer group facilitation and one-on-one support for both individuals and families.

  • Parenting skills, financial management, communication, relapse prevention, and conflict resolution.

  • Shared traditions and inter-family workshops reinforce identity, resilience, and generational healing

What our Families are Saying

  • CrossRoads Families has allowed me to heal and build a foundation on which I can live my entire life - a safe place for my children and me to call home, while surrounding me with love and support I need to create a bright future & stable footing. It's not just a program, it's a family where I've built bonds and support that will last a lifetime.

  • Families made it possible to reunify with my son. They are helping me become someone I've always desired to become. We aren't just a program; I can comfortably say Families is a part of me and my sons family and I'm forever grateful for this to exist.

    — Jared W., Families Member & Father

  • A year ago, I felt lost to depression & addiction. Thanks for Families, I now have a renewed sense of purpose. I'm going back to school this fall, I have a job where I help people who have also struggled with similar adversities. My son has his mom back, and he has peace of mind because of this program. I am forever grateful.

Our Impact Goals

This family-based program creates a rare and powerful opportunity for deep healing by bringing the whole family into the recovery process. Each person is encouraged to understand their place within the family, recognize how past patterns have shaped their relationships, and begin building new, healthier ways of connecting.
